Men’s fantasy and Automata.

by on October 13, 2012

It is fair to say that in terms of automata and robots, their inventors have mainly been men. It has been men we have analysed and there has been a clear theme (whether it be in their plays, or an actual creation) of women, and trying to create the perfect women, or recreate someone they have lost. For example Rene Descartes recreation of his daughter many years after her death, and in E.T.A. Hoffman’s story “The sandman” and Villers de l’lsle-Adams’s novel “The Eve of the Future” men fall in love with androids believing them to be the perfect women (From Gaby woods “Edison’s Eve”). This then got me thinking about the creation of male automata from male inventors.  Female automatons are almost honoured for their female form and sexuality, whereas male automatons are there to please another male fantasy of strength and power. For example Iron Man, he is not ascetically pleasing but has extreme physical power and strength conforming to the male fantasy.  As a male inventor creating a man, just like he would creating a women you would want to create something that you don’t have personally, the ideal. This results in the creation of “Perfect women” and automaton such as “The Iron Man”.
